North America

Since IFES’ early beginnings the national movements in North America have played an important part helping to drive forward our mission to students globally. Today, the IFES movements in this region face many challenges, particularly threats to campus-based ministry from increasingly secular college administrations. In spite of this, the movements continue to thrive, encouraging and equipping students throughout the region and beyond.

IFES in North America

There are three movements in North America: InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA, Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship of Canada (Inter-Varsity), and Groupes Bibliques Universitaires et Collégiaux (GBUC).

  • 909 InterVarsity/USA groups on 590 campuses
  • 85 Inter-Varsity groups on 65 campuses
  • GBUC groups in 4 universities

Please pray

  • for wisdom in the face of opposition, and for North American students to reach others with the gospel;
  • for outreach to international students and global partnerships around the world.

Postgraduates and prayer: forging a missional core

Posted by Alan Chettle

‘Prayer is where the action is...’ - John Wesley

The truth of that quote attributed to John Wesley has been increasingly borne out with my students these past months. I work with Inter-Varsity Canada, with postgraduate students at the University of Alberta, located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. We started meeting weekly to pray for each other as we engage in mission on campus.

International student ministry: serious fun!

Posted by Penny Vinden

Being an international student worker can be really fun sometimes, I thought as I read a recent email. Amy and Julie, who are with IVCF Canada in Waterloo Ontario, had written, ‘We host dinners, parties for different Muslim or international holidays, hikes, go swimming weekly with some students, and just spend time with people over lunch or a coffee.’

Racism and mission? Urbana brings them together

Posted by Penny Vinden

Michelle Higgins challenges Urbana 15 participants.

What does racism in the United States have to do with mission? Why would Urbana, one of the largest mission conferences in the world held at the end of 2015, feature a talk on racism by the black activist Michelle Higgins?

What is it really like to be a refugee?

Posted by Philippa White

Vinh as a 3-year-old as his family is rescued, Vinh as an IFES student, Vinh with his own family today.

For those of us living in stable countries, the life of a refugee can be hard to imagine. And the current crisis in the Middle East and Europe – despite the constant news coverage - can seem remote and unreal.

Racial violence – how should we respond?

Posted by Penny Vinden

InterVarsity/USA students in California  gathering on campus to pray and lament together.

The town of Ferguson is burning as I write this. There and across the United States there is much anger, grief, and outrage as a result of a grand jury decision to acquit the white police officer who killed an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, on 9 August.

The Scholar’s Compass

Posted by Hannah Eagleson

As a student, Brian Lane faced a challenge. He strongly desired to serve God and seek his glory, and he believed that would mean a career as a pastor, missionary, or campus minister. Yet he also loved teaching physics, which didn’t seem that easy to do from the front of a church.
