Albania

Despite economic progress in recent years, Albania remains one of the poorest countries in Europe. Although nearly 80% profess to be Muslim, Albanian society is mainly secular. After decades of communist atheism, the country has enjoyed religious freedom since 1991 and religious tolerance between Muslims and Christians is highly valued.

BSKSH’s partnership with local churches in the cities where they work has been crucial to groups becoming stronger in recent years. One example is the renewal of a group in the city of Elbasan. For many years this group was struggling until the movement found some committed student workers involved with the local church. The group now has about 30 members and is very stable.

The main challenge to the student movement is that of training members to be effective in sharing the gospel in a society that is mainly nominal Muslim and atheist.

View from the inside:

Zefjan Nikolla is BSKSH General Secretary. He says, ‘I became a Christian through student ministry. Later I saw God at work through an evangelistic campaign our student group from Tirana conducted in Elbasan in 1993 which led to the birth of the student group in that city. That was an event which gave many of us the confidence that “students reaching students” is possible.’

One of the Bible verses that has inspired Zefjan’s ministry and vision is John 8:32: ‘Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’

Please pray:

  • for students to demonstrate the gospel in the way they live;
  • for leaders to develop good evangelistic training programs.
