Haiti was the world's first black-led republic and the first Caribbean state to achieve independence. However, with an environment in ruins due to deforestation and frequent storms, a history of extreme political violence, instability and dictatorship, and an economy in which 1% of the French minority control half the wealth, Haiti’s situation has been described by the UN as ‘catastrophic’.
Work on developing the movement, the GBEUH, has been slow in Haiti, explained in part by the country’s political and economic history. Political troubles have lead to disruptions in university teaching programmes, with consequences not only on students’ studies but also on the movement’s work.
However, Haitian students are both persistent and courageous! Despite the struggles, there is a strong will to keep the ministry developing. Highly motivated and full of hope, these workers for the gospel contrast strongly with the general atmosphere of the country, which is making them attractive to their peers. It is believed that God is at work through this, in helping to grow the work.
Please pray for:
- the movement’s staff and for regional coordinator for the French speaking Caribbean, Marc Pulvar, as they work to develop the ministry in this volatile country;
- an increasing number of groups in university and school locations;
- publication of contextually appropriate literature to help with the discipleship of student believers and leaders.
Praise God for:
- Christians providing a beacon of hope in an otherwise dire situation.
Haiti is part of caribbean
This culturally and linguistically diverse region is searching for its identity. In these countries which face the challenges of poverty, of alumni migration, of developing plans to build a sustainable future, the IFES movements find themselves in a unique position to contribute to the strengthening of the region through their work with students.
